Listen to the recorded Listening Session here! Talk begins at 1:50.

This Listening Session takes place as part of the 2012 Louis Armstrong Legacy Program and is free and open to the public.
Dana Hall will play records and lead a discussion about the life and legacy of trumpet virtuoso Louis Armstrong. Armstrong was the first important soloist to emerge in jazz, and he became perhaps the most influential musician in the music's history. His playing, beginning with the 1920s studio recordings made with his Hot Five and Hot Seven ensembles, charted a future for jazz in highly imaginative, emotionally charged improvisation. For this, he is revered by jazz fans. But Armstrong also became an enduring figure in popular music, due to his distinctively phrased bass singing and engaging personality, which were on display in a series of vocal recordings and film roles.
CJE LISTENING SESSIONS
The Chicago Jazz Ensemble presents this free event as part of its signature series of
informal gatherings in which Artistic Director Dana Hall, jazz artists,
educators, and/or critics lead an interactive discussion around a
particular topic in jazz. Sessions often feature live music
demos, multi-media components, and music recordings.
