Summer camp for jazz: Brushing up with the masters |
Howard Reich My Kind of Jazz
June 9, 2009
Now that summer's approaching, it's time for ... jazz camp?
Yes, indeed, several luminaries of Chicago jazz -- including trumpeter Jon Faddis, singer Bobbi Wilsyn and drummer Dana Hall -- will share tricks of the trade next month with Chicagoans who want to learn from the best.
Consider it the jazz equivalent of the basketball camps that Michael Jordan and other NBA stars offer players of various ability levels.
The debut event formally goes by the name "Straight Ahead Jazz Summer Camp for Music Educators," but just about any adult who wants to play will be welcome.
"It is very open to anyone who's interested in learning more about jazz, anyone who might be interested in becoming a teacher, ... any novice player," says Diane Chandler-Marshall, education director for the non-profit Jazz Institute of Chicago, which is creating the camp with Columbia College Chicago.
"The great thing about it is that people get an opportunity to work with the pros -- they get a chance to play."
The sessions will begin July 20 with a "Jazz History Tour" tour of the South Side of Chicago, led by noted scholars Timuel Black and Richard Wang. Later in the week, Faddis will lead sessions in jazz styles, including "Origins to Swing" and "Bebop & Beyond"; Hall will explore "Rhythm Section Techniques"; and Wilsyn will coach vocalists in singing jazz.
"This is the first time we've done this," says Chandler-Marshall, "but we hope it catches on."
"Straight Ahead Jazz Summer Camp for Music Educators" runs July 20-24 at Columbia College Chicago, 1014 S. Michigan Ave.; $110; registration deadline is June 30; call 312-427-1676 or visit jazzinchicago.org.
